International Strategies for Unlocking Green Hydrogen in the US

Apr 21 2021, 15:00 UTC - Apr 21 2021, 16:00 UTC

Hosted by Global Wind Energy Council

In addition to large-scale renewable energy deployment, system-wide decarbonisation will require long-duration energy carrier and storage solutions and flexible, clean fuel sources. Green hydrogen is increasingly the solution of choice to enable decarbonisation of sectors which are more difficult to electrify, such as steel and cement production, chemicals and long-haul transport. After decades of failing to take off due to barriers in production costs, transport, demand and cost-competitiveness, green hydrogen now has a place in the national energy strategies of more than one dozen countries. Its applications and potential in the US are yet untested, but hold high potential as wind and solar energy scale up across the country. However, today around 95% of hydrogen production is based on methane gas and coal, and widescale deployment of green hydrogen solutions in the US face steep cost reduction and infrastructural challenges.

This session will bring together representatives of national and international bodies which have invested in long-term hydrogen strategies, including the EU, Canada and Chile, where lessons may be drawn for the US. It will also include a dialogue with developers and technology providers integrating hydrogen solutions into clean energy projects for cross-sector application. Together, these policy and industry leaders will address the future for green hydrogen in the US, and what steps can be taken now to catalyse its deployment.
